A September to Remember: Brooklyn Museum Announces Diverse Lineup of Public Programs

The Brooklyn Museum has unveiled an exciting and diverse schedule of public programs for September, designed to engage visitors of all ages. The lineup includes the tenth annual dapperQ fashion show, three community-focused Museum on Wheels stops, and an Art History Happy Hour celebrating the exhibition Red Grooms, Mimi Gross, and The Ruckus Construction Co.: Excerpts from “Ruckus Manhattan.” These programs, along with weekly markets and family workshops, are designed to amplify the Museum’s exhibitions, serve the surrounding community, and support learning through the visual arts.

The month kicks off with the Museum on Wheels: Bed-Stuy block party on Saturday, September 6. This free event at 677 Lafayette Avenue celebrates environmentalist Hattie Carthan with art-making, games, music, and giveaways from local vendors Saint Michel Café and Bakery, Island Pops, and Brooklyn Tea.

A highlight of the season is dapperQ Presents Ten on Thursday, September 11. This event celebrates a decade of New York Fashion Week’s largest LGBTQIA+ fashion show. Held in the Beaux-Arts Court, the $20 ticket includes a happy hour hosted by Henrietta Hudson, a shopping experience with local designers, and a runway showcase featuring new designs from acclaimed brands.

The Museum on Wheels program continues on Saturday, September 13, with a stop in Brownsville at 26 Belmont Ave. This free block party will feature art-making activities, games, and giveaways from Yadestiny Treasure Chest, Island Pops, and Brooklyn Tea.

Starting Sunday, September 14, the Brooklyn Pop-Up Market begins its weekly run on the Museum's first-floor plaza. Every Sunday through November 16, visitors can shop for one-of-a-kind, handmade items from over 30 local artisans offering artwork, jewelry, fashion, and home goods.

On Thursday, September 18, the Art History Happy Hour focuses on Ruckus Manhattan. For $30, attendees can enjoy a specialty drink, after-hours exhibition access, and short, informative lectures on the featured artists and their work.

For families, the Drop-In Workshops: Life at Sea begin the weekend of September 20-21. Held in the Education Gallery, these free-with-admission sessions invite visitors to help expand Oliver Jeffers’s underwater world by creating colorful creatures and structures to add to the installation.

The month concludes with Museum on Wheels: Williamsburg on Saturday, September 27, where the mobile museum will join El Puente’s !WEPA! Festival at 216 Roebling St. Activities include designing instruments, contributing to a community altar, and engaging with touchable objects from the museum’s teaching collection.
